Uncle Joe Cannon Walldog Mural

Information

The mural portrays Uncle Joe bigger than life and in stark black & white – just as he saw decisions in politics.

They called him the “Tyrant of Illinois.”  Danville’s “Uncle Joe” Cannon served 47 years as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.   For 8 years of that time, he served as the powerful Speaker of the House.

Historians generally consider him to be the most dominant Speaker in U.S. history with such control over the House that he could often control debate.  At that time, the Speaker of the House had powers second only to those of the President.

Uncle Joe’s reputation, no doubt, helped lead to his selection as the first person to be placed on the cover of Time Magazine, in it’s first edition published March 23, 1923.
