Danville’s Oldsmobile Balloon Classic Illinois began in 1987 and remained one of the nation’s premier hot air balloon competitions for more than a decade.
From the first organized night race, to the women’s championship race, to the fabulous public exhibit of art in the sky, the event was known internationally for its new and innovative twists. The mural was fashioned after a picture taken at the event.
The Balloon Classic continues each July as Balloons Over Vermilion.
