SUMMARY:2024 MLK Celebration:  "I Have A Dream"
DESCRIPTION:The celebration will begin with a motorcade/parade on Monday\, January 15\, 2024.  The line-up for the motorcade/parade will begin at 10:00 am at the corner of Main and Logan Streets\, and the procession will start at 10:30 am.  The motorcade will turn east on Main Street.  It will travel north on Vermilion Street.  Then it will turn right onto Seminary Street.  Travel until it gets to the corner of Jackson and Seminary.  Make a left onto Jackson Street.   Travel on Jackson Street to the corner of Jackson and Williams.  Pause for a small ceremony at the Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Monument.  Then proceed west on Williams Street to Vermilion Street\, turn right onto Vermilion Street\, then it will turn left onto Davis Street and park on the northwest side of St. James United Methodist Church’s parking lot.  This event is open to the public. \nThe Community-Wide Service at St. James United Methodist Church will start at 11:30 am.  The Reverend Katrese Kirk-McKenzie\, who is an Itinerant Elder of the African Medthodist Episcopal (AME) Church and member of the Chicago Conference\, will servew as the speaker for the service.  Kirk-Mckenzie is a Danville native\, and she was the recipient of the MLK Scholarship in 2000.  This event is open to the public. \nThe service will include the presentation of the $4000.00 MLK Scholarship to a Danville graduating high school senior.  In addition\, an ensemble of singers\, under the direction of MLK Music Director Brett Dupree\, will perform at the service. \nFor additional information\, contact the Humans Relations Department at 217-431-2280

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Independence Day\, VA Illiana is hosting a celebration to honor America and salute the sacrifice of all Veterans. The event\, called “Red\, White\, and BBQ\,” will be held at VA Illiana’s Danville VA Medical Center on Friday\, June 30\, 2023\, and will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. Following the parade\, food will be available for purchase on-site from House of Brisket Paris food truck. \nThis year’s parade will feature between 100-150 participants from local and regional car clubs\, the Danville Fire Department\, the Danville Police Honor Guard\, and local businesses. It will also include appearances by local pageant winners. In-patient Veterans will line the route as the parade makes its way through the VA Illiana campus.

DESCRIPTION:Ladies and Gentlemen – join us for the 2022 annual Marquee Bulb ornament sale!\n\nFriday\, December 2nd from 4:00p-6:00p in the Fischer Theatre lobby\, just before the Night of Lights Parade Downtown.\n\nWe’ll be serving Hot Chocolate Cocktails and more for this festive annual tradition!\n\nHere’s a message from artist Amy Chrisman to tell you more about this year’s ornaments:\n\nDear Friends\,\nI’m excited to announce that the 2022 Fischer Theatre Marquee Bulb Ornaments go on sale Friday\, December 2\, at 4 p.m. in the lobby of the historic Fischer Theatre in downtown Danville\, IL. The sale takes place prior to the Night of Lights Parade which begins at 6 p.m. and passes by the front of the Fischer Theater on Vermilion Street.\nThis year there are only 30 ornaments of two different colors to choose from.\n$75 each; limit 2 per person.\nMust be present to purchase—no online orders or shipping.\nFirst come-first serve; no holds or pre-sales.\nOnce sold out\, no more will be created.\nThere will be NO PARKING on Vermilion Street due to the parade. Therefore\, seek parking on streets nearby the Fischer. (There is a free parking lot on Walnut and Harrison street behind the Fischer.)\n\nThese are collector’s items of Danville’s history. Past ornament sales have sold out quickly so it is recommended to get there early.\nConcessions such as hot chocolate and popcorn will be for sale in the Fischer.\nHorse and carriage rides will be taking place nearby\, as well.\n\nThis is the sixth year I have volunteered my time to design and handcraft a commemorative ornament using a vintage lightbulb that once lit up the Fischer’s marquee. This year’s design is based on a little known aspect of the Fischer’s history: The Portia Club. Between 1933-1975\, the Portia Club was located on the third and fourth floors of the theater as apartments for reputable\, single women. I can’t wait to tell you more about what I learned through my research—and I certainly will in a later post. Also\, few people realize that those upper floors were not a part of the restoration of the rest of the theater in 2019\, and that space is still in need of renovation.\n\nAs always\, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these ornaments benefit the Fischer Theatre.\nI hope you will come out and support the Fischer with your purchase and stay to enjoy the Night of Lights Parade in downtown Danville.\nI am looking forward to seeing you there!
