DESCRIPTION:The Bunker Hill Historic Area buildings at Kennekuk County Park will also be staffed with volunteers and open to the public for tours on Sunday\, July 7\, 2024 from 1 – 4 pm.\n\nThe Neff Grocery Store\, Atwood Home\, Bismarck Train Depot\, Red Oak School\, Old Time Print Shop\, and the Mack and Son Barber Shop take people back to the time period of 1890’s-1940’s.\n\nTo add to the nostalgia\, the Redbud String Band will be performing at the Gazebo located in the Bunker Hill Historic Area.  The Redbud String Band will play two sets\, 1 pm and 2:30 pm\, with a mixture of American old time\, Celtic (Scots and Irish)\, Civil War era\, and some early 20th century ragtime.\n\nBring your lawn chairs and enjoy an afternoon of nostalgia with tours of the buildings and live music!

This years theme is “Marchin’ Towards Freedom”. \nThis year the DJCC is working in conjunction with Crosspoint Human Sevices and thanks to a grant through Healing Illinois there will be free t shirts\, food\, ice cream\, and raffle giveaways ranging from grocery cards to bikes\, televisions\, and tablets. \nThe celebration will run from 1-6 pm and will be immediately followed by a free concert featuring soul violinist Bell Darris and panel discussion with Rep Brandun Schweizer and Danville’s Vice Mayor at the Masonic Temple located at 109 North Street. The concert will run from 6-7:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Ceremony at Danville National Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Danville National Cemetery and VA Illiana Health Care System will host a Memorial Day ceremony to commemorate those who have given their lives while serving in America’s military. \n\n\nThe ceremony will include keynote remarks\, performances by the Danville Municipal Band and musician Curt Kiser\, and a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the fallen. \nThe ceremony will also include color guard honors by the Marine Corps league\, a 21-gun salute\, and the sounding of Taps by members of American Legion Post 210. \nThe public is invited to the event\, which will take place rain or shine. The event can also be viewed live on Facebook. \n\n\n\n\nIn anticipation of the ceremony\, Danville National Cemetery staff will place flags on every grave in the cemetery. Volunteers are invited to join this effort on Saturday from 9-11 a.m.

This is a FREE event.  Parking is available in the Museum parking lot\, Auto-Mobile Diagnostics\, and Carle. \nFor additional information\, call the Museum at 217-442-2922 \nLincoln birthday cards\, created by students from County and Danville schools\, will be on display in the Museum Center\, for free\, from February 13th to February 29th during regular business hours so students can see their cards on display. DESCRIPTION:Visitors can tour and enjoy the holiday decor at the Atwood Home\, Red Oak School\, Vermilion Chapel\, Neff Grocery Store and Print Shop. \nAt the Neff Grocery Store visitors can listen to old-time Christmas radio shows from the 1940’s and 1950’s such as the Jack Benny Show and the Fibber McGee and Molly Show while enjoying hot chocolate\, hot apple cider and assorted cookies. \nHoliday themed card and cutouts that were created using antique machinery at the Print Shop will be available for children to color\, decorate and take home. \nThe Holiday Lights display debuts and runs every night from 5pm-8pm until December 31\, 2022.

DESCRIPTION:Documentary About Life of “Uncle” Joe Cannon\nIf you’ve lived in the Danville Area for very long\, you’ve heard the name “Uncle” Joe Cannon.  There’s even a painting of his face on downtown building.  But do you know what made Joe Cannon famous\, where he came from\, or what circumstances shaped his choices? \n“Uncle” Joe Cannon was an influential leader of this time spending five decades in the US Congress.  He graced the cover of the first edition of Time Magazine and he has a building named for him in Washington\, DC.  This documentary\, procuded by DACC student Jason Cotten\, shares the story of Joe Cannon’s life\, his rise to dominance as the powerful Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives\, and his influence on Washington. \nPremiering Wednesday\, November 1\, at 1:00 PM in Bremer Theater\, this movie explores the life of Joe Cannon from his earliest beginnings in Danville through his time in Washington\, DC.  The project was prompted by the dedication and renaming of the Vermilion County Administrative Offices to the Joesph G. Cannon Building\, and the unveiling of the Cannon bust.  Cotten produced the film during the summer of 2023 with insight from local attorney and historian Tom Smith\, and photos from the Vermilion County Museum.  Both Cotten and Smith will be on hand to discuss the collection of materials and information\, and the eventual filming and production of the documentary. \nAdmission to the presentation is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Vermilion County Museum Society will open The Lamon House the first Sunday of each month from May through October from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, with Becky and Alan Woodrum portraying Melissa Beckwith Lamon and Hiram Beckwith. \nThe Lamon House was built by Joseph B. and Melissa Beckwith Lamon around 1847. \nThe home\, which originally only had four main rooms\, is split log construction under clapboard. \nOriginally located at 302 W. North St.\, the house was moved to Lincoln Park in 1984. \nThere is no charge to tour the Lamon House\, however museum staff said donations are always accepted and can be given at the end of the tour. \nAdditional tour times will be announced on the Vermilion County Museum’s Facebook page throughout the season. \nFor more information\, call the museum at 217-442-2922 or visit www.vermilioncountymuseum.org
